Often thought of as the “quintessential” crystal, quartz is the second most abundant mineral on Earth, and one of the most common stones you will find in magical supply shops. Comprised of just two elements—silicon and oxygen—it runs in color from completely “crystal clear” to milky white. Clear quartz is found as a six-sided prism and is often used in schools to demonstrate the ability of a mineral to hold the entire spectrum of light—held in sunlight, the prism will transmit rainbow patterns onto floors and walls. The Aztecs, Egyptians, Romans, and many other ancient cultures used quartz in a multitude of ways that ranged from meditations to funerary rites. Among ancient lunar-aligned stone circles in Scotland, for example, lumps of white quartz were ritually broken and scattered, which may have mimicked the moonlight shining down on the participants. And according to some interpretations, quartz is among the “seven precious substances” of Buddhism. Today, it is widely used in alternative healing modalities as well as magic of various kinds. Known to some as “the Witch’s mirror,” quartz is associated with both the Moon and the Sun and the Elements of Water and Fire. This stone is a potent tool for storing energy in the form of thoughts, memories and emotions, and can be easily “programmed” to activate previously stored energy when called upon. Quartz is often used to charge magical tools and spell ingredients, and can even be used to energetically cleanse other crystals and stones. Quartz is also considered the “sage” of all minerals as it most easily facilitates the merging of the physical and spiritual realms. This is, after all, the original substance that crystal balls are made from! Quartz absorbs and transmits energy from the Sun as well as from the life force of trees, plants and flowers, and like several other crystals it can be used to revitalize struggling plants around the home. Quartz is a great all-around rebalancing stone, replacing negative energies with positive ones and keeping harmonious vibrations going strong in any area where it resides.
